Oseltamivir (Tamiflu)

What is Tamiflu used for? 

Tamiflu is an antiviral agent that is used for: 

  • Influenza treatment 

  • Influenza prophylaxis


What are the most common side effects seen with Tamiflu? 

  • Headache

  • Nausea 

  • Vomiting


Contraindications

Tamiflu shouldn’t be taken if your child has had an anaphylactic reaction (hives or swelling of the tongue) to tamiflu previously. 


Tips & Tricks to administer Tamiflu

If your child is having difficulty taking Tamiflu (liquid or capsules), it can be mixed in some foods or beverages. Please keep in mind that if a medication is mixed with food or drink, it should be taken immediately. The mixture should not be saved or consumed later.


Tamiflu oral suspension (liquid) can be mixed with: 

  • Mix with any food or beverage based on the child's preference.


Tamiflu capsules can be mixed with: 

  • Capsules can be opened and mixed with any sweetened (sugar or sugar free) liquid (ex: chocolate syrup, corn syrup, caramel topping, light brown sugar).


How to store Tamiflu 

  • Tamiflu capsules should be stored at room temperature. 

  • Tamiflu liquid can be stored in the refrigerator or at room temperature (refrigerator is preferred - this will help it last longer). Do not freeze. 


Breast feeding considerations 

  • Tamiflu can be present in breast milk if being taken by the mother. 

  • Tamiflu is generally considered as compatible with breastfeeding.
