Simethicone

What is simethicone used for? 

Simethicone is a medication which helps with gas pain or GI discomfort. 


What are the most common side effects seen with simethicone? 

  • None reported 


Contraindications

Simethicone shouldn’t be taken if your child has had an anaphylactic reaction (hives or swelling of the tongue) to simethicone previously. 


Tips & Tricks to administer simethicone 

If your child is having difficulty taking simethicone (liquid or tablets), it can be mixed in some foods or beverages. Please keep in mind that if a medication is mixed with food or drink, it should be taken immediately. The mixture should not be saved or consumed later.


  • Simethicone oral suspension (drops) can be mixed with any beverage based on the preference of the child. 

  • Simethicone tablets can be chewed thoroughly and swallowed or can be crushed and added to any drink based on the preference of the child. 


How to store simethicone 

  • Store at room temperature. Do not freeze. 

  • Protect from excessive heat and moisture. 


Breast feeding considerations 

  • Simethicone is not present in breast milk and can safely be taken while breast feeding an infant.
